Island Hopping in Dalmatia

6 days

Six days by bike from Vodice: Vransko jezero, the Roman trail to Skradin, Zadar, the island of Vir and Murter.

Cycling out of Vodice into the middle of the coast. A loop of Vransko jezero, Croatia’s largest natural lake, the Roman ruins on the way to Skradin and Krka, Zadar and the island of Vir, and a circuit of Murter looking out at the Kornati. A Dalmatian spread of prosciutto, sheep cheese and wine on the road.

Day by day

  1. 01

    Home to Vodice

    Arrival

Travel via Zagreb to Vodice. On arrival, rooms at the hotel in Vodice. Dinner at the hotel.

  2. 02

    Vransko jezero Nature Park

From the hotel it is about 15 minutes to the start of today’s ride around the largest natural freshwater lake in Croatia, which is also an important ornithological reserve.

On the way we visit Maškovića Han, a significant piece of cultural heritage from the Ottoman period. The ride runs through the varied landscape around the lake and offers fine views of the nature and the surrounding region.

    Dinner at the hotel.

  3. 03

On the trail of the Romans

After breakfast the bus takes us about 30 minutes to the start of today’s ride.

Past vineyards and olive groves we come upon Roman ruins and traditional stone houses that tell of the history and the life of times gone by.

Our route heads towards Skradin, where the bus picks us up later. From there we ride on into Krka National Park to the famous Skradinski Buk waterfall. After a walk along the striking falls we ride back to Skradin.

  4. 04

Zadar, the island of Vir and Nin

After breakfast we drive to Zadar. On a cultural and historical walk we explore the roughly 3,000 year old city and its famous sights.

Among others we see the Church of St Donatus and the Roman forum, and experience the singular Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun.

Afterwards we carry on to the island of Vir. We ride around the island and then continue to Nin, the oldest Croatian royal town. Among other things it holds the famous little Church of the Holy Cross, often called the smallest cathedral in the world. In the afternoon we return to the hotel. Dinner at the hotel.

  5. 05

    The island of Murter

After breakfast the bus takes us to Tisno, about 30 minutes away. There our ride begins, over the characteristic drawbridge onto the island of Murter.

We ride around the island and take in splendid views of the island world of the Kornati National Park and of many hidden coves.

On the way a typical Dalmatian spread awaits us, with regional specialities such as Dalmatian prosciutto, sheep cheese, wine and water.

Afterwards we return to the hotel.

    Dinner at the hotel.

  6. 06
